In class today we completed a fun yet informative Internet Infrastructure Scavenger Hunt. I had no idea Tim Berners-Lee invent the World Wide Web and wrote the first web client and web server. It is also interesting he formed World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The W3C helps develop Web standards which allows more stable web for end users to enjoy.
I also enjoyed the video about the Warriors of the Net. The video gave me insight on how the Internet works. I think, although cheesy at times, the video explained very well how the data request are processed. From the data request from the end user through the LAN to the firewall to the Internet router; the packet is now in the World Wide Web (good luck!). The packet is then sent through the destination and goes though a port based on the type of packet. 80 for http and 23 for e-mail etc. The packet goes through the reverse order until it receives the data it request. Once it has the data the packet is sent back to the end user. Simplicity at its best!

8-20 Overview
In class discussion about different technologies was interesting. As we got into groups of three or so we came up with different technologies, uses of the internet, uses of businesses, social issues and etc. Some of the topics I did not know, I did know or I knew about but was not sure of their terminology. This exercise gave me awareness of the broad scope of internet technology and we barely scratched the surface.
We also overviewed the OSI model. The last time I reviewed the OSI model was in undergrad junior year. So probably around Spring 2005 or so. I believed I remembered everything about the OSI model but I was extremely incorrect. I am glad the review was broken into groups of peers. It gives us time to focus on one layer and also hear from our peers’ point of view on their assigned layer.
Our group collaborated on the Transport layer of the OSI model. The Transport layer handles flow control and end-to-end error recovery. The overall job is to provide the necessary functions to enable communication between software application processes on different computers. It has algorithms that ensure that reliable and efficient communication between devices takes place. An example of the transport layer is TCP.

Hello Everyone! This is my first blog. I would like to introduce myself. I am Carlton Pitts. I am currently enrolled in the Masters of Internet Technology program at the University of Georgia - Gwinnett Campus. I am hoping the gain knowledge from the professors as well as my peers in the program. I believe this will be an experience like no other and I look forward to the program.
