This week in MIST...

This week in MIST class I gained knowledge on iPhone development. Given the task to create a directory page we sought knowledge from the book Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript by Jonathan Stark. This book will be an essential tool for anyone building applications or developing for the iPhone.

In the Database Management class we overviewed Energy Informatics. Energy Informatics can be defined as the analyzing, designing, and implementing information systems to increase energy efficiency. This is a very interesting and relevant topic today; especially because of global warming and the increase of energy being used daily. The information systems ties together elements to provide a complete solution. Information systems automate aspects and provide interfaces for suppliers and consumers.

Focusing on Energy Informatics, systems supply information to manage energy supply and demand to minimize emissions. Systems also enable consumer to control energy usage to reduce energy consumption.

Dr. Watson illustrated UPS case study Energy Informatics. The study including UPS truck drivers usings reverse, idling, and gave mechanical report on the trucks. The study found when drivers kept reversing at a minimum, it decreased accidents and travel times causing more efficient routes. When drivers idle, energy is used, especially when turning on the engine before the driver is ready to leave for their destination. Training the drivers to turn the engine on last saved on energy wasted while idling. Lastly the mechanical report notified managers of potential failures; thus increasing uptime and efficiency.
